One of the greatest fish ladders in Europe

Over the centuries, man has built dams and other hydraulic structures for purposes of water travel, farming or electrical power generation. These structures often get in the way of fish trying to reach their spawning grounds.

In order to restore the fishes’ freedom of movement within the Rhine basin, Germany and France signed an agreement in 1997, pertaining to the construction, use and maintenance of fish passes around the hydroelectric facilities at Iffezheim and Gambsheim.

The fish ladder at Iffezheim has been operational since June 2000 and the one at Gambsheim since June 2006. These fish passes are currently the biggest in Europe.

With funds of the European Union a Visitors' Gallery was furnished which is accessible for visitors since 2007.
